Anadrol (Oxandrolone) is a synthetic steroid whose A ring is a heterocycle in which the second carbon atom is replaced by an oxygen atom. Oxandrolone is widely known for its extremely low androgenic activity along with its high anabolic index.

Oxandrolone was originally developed for the treatment of debilitated HIV patients, Turner syndrome, anaemia, recovery from burns, and bone strengthening, but it soon came to be widely used in bodybuilding, after which Anavar was listed as a controlled drug.

Side effects

Although oxandrolone is an alpha-17-alkylated steroid, its toxic effects on the liver are negligible. Studies show that Anavar at a dose of 20 mg per day taken for 12 weeks has no effect on liver enzymes (liver damage indicators). Signs of liver damage include pain in the right side of the stomach, light-coloured stools and dark urine.

Because Anavar is a dihydrotestosterone derivative, it does not aromatise (it does not convert into estrogens, which cause side effects such as gynaecomastia and fluid accumulation in the body).

Oxandrolone has no significant effect on intrinsic testosterone production at moderate doses (does not inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular feedback axis). When the dosage of Anavar is high, the body reacts by reducing gonadotropin production, believing that endogenous testosterone levels are too high. The lack of stimulation of Leydig cells leads to testicular atrophy. Oxandrolone used at a dose of 80 mg daily suppresses testosterone levels by 67% after 12 weeks of use.

Suppression of testosterone production is manifested by decreased libido and sluggish erections. This side effect of oxandrolone can be eliminated by adding gonadotropin to the course or by combining it with androgenic drugs.

Side-effects of Anavar such as decreased appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, headaches, raised blood pressure and some others are also sometimes encountered.
